This course targets those individuals who aim to work as Nurses in Malta or European Countries. Non-Eu citizens who are in possession of a minimum BSc in Nursing or 3.5 Years of Diploma Nursing who would like to practice Nursing in Malta or European countries.

Course Intended For

This course is intended for those who are aged 18+ and who are in possession of a minimum BSc in Nursing or 3.5 Years of Diploma Nursing who would like to practice Nursing in Malta or European countries.

Course Assessment

This programme shall implement various assessment methods, including formative and summative assessments to ensure that the learners have obtained the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively work as a nurse. The aforementioned methods of assessment will also be deployed to ensure that the learners are made aware of their strengths and their weaknesses at various points throughout the duration of the programme. Formative and summative assessments are included in the programme as specified below:

Summative Assessment:

Summative assessments for this programme include individual assignments, examinations, and practical assessments testing learners on their acquired knowledge and skills.

Formative Assessment:

Formative assessments are equally as important as summative assessments as they outline any challenges as well as the progress that learners have made. It will allow them to understand their strengths and weaknesses and allows the tutor to support them according to these same strengths and weaknesses. Formative assessments included in this program include reflective journals and observations, carrying 10% of the total mark of the individual modules. Through the formative assessment, learners will be asked to submit a full reflective journal at the end of the module and not drafts. Learners are able to discuss reflective journals with their tutors prior to their final submission.

Learners must pass both elements of the assign.

This course is accredited and licensed by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority (MFHEA).

Admission Requirements
  • In order to be eligible to apply for this programme of study, prospective students must be in possession of a minimum:

    (a)       Non-Eu citizens who are in possession of  a level 5 or 6 in nursing

    (b)       Minimum of 1 Year Working Experience

    (c)       IELTS 6.0 or equivalent

    (Learners who have 4,600 of theory and practice, however have 2,200 practice hours shall still be accepted to the bridging course programme)

Learning Outcomes

The learner will be able to:

  1. Critically reflect and discuss the main theories, concepts and practical skills required by nurses to work effectively and provide patient-centred, high quality nursing care
  2. Reflect on the standards of professional conduct and the regulations and laws governing the nursing and medical profession
  3. Assess the importance of infection prevention and control when delivering nursing services
  4. Identify the principles of the effective provision of intravenous therapy and the best practices in nursing care for the use of blood and blood products, moving and handling clients-control analgesia, total parenteral nutrition and central line care
  5. Reflect and develop knowledge about the hazards when handling patients in nursing and healthcare
  6. Identify the basic principles and processes of moving and handling, log roll, sitting a patient upright, turning patients using sliding sheets, moving a patient using sliding sheets, sitting patients in the edge of the bed, and standing the patient
  7. Explain the use of urinary catheters and the various ways to implement preventive measures and effective infection control methods when dealing with catheters
  8. Reflect on the use and insertion procedures of NGT/Feeding devices, management and care
  9. Identify the role of mental health nurse, as well as the typical scenarios encountered by nurses related to mental health
  10. Reflect on pathology and the implications for caring for the elderly
  11. Reflect on the importance of promoting healthcare and its role on the overall perception of the community on healthcare
  12. List and discuss medical and surgical conditions which are considered emergency including respiratory, cardiac, poisoning, acute abdomen, shock, trauma and neurologic emergencies
  13. Critically reflect on the importance of preparing documentation effectively when caring for children and young people
  14. Identify the role and responsibilities of the nurse in the maternity setting.
  15. Apply nursing theories, concepts, and practical skills to provide patient-centred, high-quality nursing.
  16. Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills in various situations in nursing practice.
  17. Plan for the effective prevention of the spread of infections in communities and hospitals.
  18. Plan for effective risk management and monitoring in intravenous therapy.
  19. Apply various risk assessment techniques prior to moving and handling a patient.
  20. Prepare the patient effectively including the exploration of other techniques, analysis of the patient and provision of privacy.
  21. Prepare the patient for effective feeding through NG tubes and feeding devices.
  22. Demonstrate outstanding and effective teamwork skills when working within a multidisciplinary team.
  23. Apply principles of primary healthcare when providing nursing care in the community and primary care.
  24. Identify and apply the care interventions required according to emergency injuries or illnesses.
  25. Plan accordingly for the provision of care for a child and their family depending on their needs.
  26. Provide the necessary pre-conception, antenatal, internatal and postnatal care to women, newborns, and their families effectively.
